Francis Lanigan loses extradition challenge over murder charge

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Francis Lanigan lost his extradition challenge in the High Court on 21 January 2019 over charges of murder and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. The offences concerned the alleged 1998 killing of John Knocker in Dungannon.

Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy lifted a stay on surrender after the Supreme Court refused to hear a further appeal. Lanigan’s side did not contest the application, and he is to be returned to Northern Ireland. The proceedings were reported on 21 January 2019.

Lanigan had opposed extradition because he said his life would be at risk from loyalist and republican paramilitaries, and disputed the Northern Ireland authorities’ account of Knocker’s death.
