A former bare-knuckle boxer has been jailed for possession of an imitation firearm after waiving an appeal over his sentence.

Regan Daly, also known as Regan Buckley (28), of Cois Cairn, Old Conna Road, Bray, appeared at a sitting of Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court.

The accused pleaded guilty to one count of theft, possession of drugs for sale or supply, simple possession of drugs, and possession of an imitation firearm.

Mr Daly received a four-month custodial sentence in the District Court by Judge David Kennedy. He had sentenced Mr Daly to eight months imprisonment on the firearms offence, but suspended the final four months and imposed a further €750 fine for the remaining offences.

Mr Daly is a former amateur boxer who achieved success, winning multiple titles in Ireland and a bronze medal at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, but notably missed out on a place on Team Ireland for the 2016 Brazil Olympics and rejected the opportunity to box at the World qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.

He also ventured into bare-knuckle boxing on BKB UK’s Mayhem Manchester event in May 2022.

The court previously heard that on November 11, 2023, the former undefeated professional boxer stole €20 worth of petrol from a Circle K service station in Brennanstown.

He was also found in possession of cocaine for the purpose of sale or supply at an address on Hawthorn Road in Bray.

In June 2023, he was found in possession of a realistic imitation firearm at a garage on Rutland Road.

Solicitor for the defendant, Michael O’Connor, told the court that the accused wished to waive his appeal and enter custody immediately.

He also made an application for legal aid, stating that “due to Mr Buckley going into custody, he won’t be working for a while”.

Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin agreed, before Mr Daly was remanded into custody, where he will begin his sentence.
