A fisherman who gave a fake name to a fisheries officer received a €400 penalty at Killarney District Court last Tuesday.

Conor Egan of Marion Ville, 12 Riverview Estate, Ballyvolane, Cork identified himself as Conor Daly to an Inland Fisheries officer after he was caught fishing illegally by the headwaters of the River Laune.

He appeared before Judge David Waters for obstructing a fisheries officer and rod fishing without authorisation at the North Bank of Laune Fishery, Lismongane, Fossa on on April 6, 2025.

Solicitor for the defence, Pádraig O’Connell, said his client was homeless and suffered from addiction. “He’s gone into a treatment centre,” said Mr O’Connell. “He hasn’t a penny to his name.”

The judge fined him €200 for each conviction and €150 for costs.

In a separate case, James O’Driscoll of Muing, Oak Park, Tralee was fined €150 for unauthorised fishing after using the wrong bait on March 21, 2025.

Mr O’Driscoll was licensed for fly fishing but used worms, the court heard. He was caught by a fisheries inspector in the same area as Mr Egan.

“He brought the wrong tackle, judge,” said his solicitor, Mr O’Connell.
