Fergal Ryan was awarded €50,000 for unfair dismissal by the Workplace Relations Commission, in a decision reported on 30 June 2022.
Ryan, former general manager of the Clayton Hotel in Sligo, brought an unfair dismissal complaint against Dalata Hotel Group plc under the Unfair Dismissals Act.
The WRC found that the petty cash allegations did not justify dismissal, although Ryan had made cash payments to workers, including two porters and a relief chef.
The commission also found that a letter to Ryan’s line manager was not considered in the disciplinary investigation; it awarded compensation while taking account of Ryan’s contribution and difficulty finding alternative work during the pandemic.
