Father’s sexual assault conviction overturned on appeal

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A father’s sexual assault conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal on 31 July 2020. He cannot be named to protect his daughter’s identity.

The court quashed the conviction after finding concerns about the handling of diary evidence and corroboration at trial. It said the combination meant it could not confidently regard the trial as fair or the verdict as safe.

The court said it would list the matter to address any application for a retrial.
