Enoch Burke remains jailed for contempt over school order

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Enoch Burke remained in Mountjoy prison for contempt after the High Court reviewed his detention on 3 October 2023. He had again refused to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath.

Mr Justice Mark Sanfey ordered that Burke remain imprisoned until he was prepared to purge his contempt by giving an undertaking to stay away from the school. The judge said Burke could return to court at any time to give undertakings that would secure his release.

Burke argued that complying would deny his religious beliefs and described the order as unjust. Those were his submissions; the review concerned contempt, rather than the dispute between Burke and the school.
