Enoch Burke released from prison over contempt of court

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Enoch Burke was released from Mountjoy Prison by the High Court on 28 June 2024, after more than 400 days in custody for failing to obey an order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath.

Mr Justice Mark Sanfey ordered his release while the school was on holiday, without requiring him to purge his contempt. He warned that the order barring Burke from the school remained in force and that breaching it could lead to an application to return him to prison.

Burke had been returned to prison after a hearing on 22 March 2024 at which he did not engage with the judge’s offer of temporary release over the Easter holidays.
