Enoch Burke fined €700 daily for contempt over school ban

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Enoch Burke was ordered to pay a €700 daily fine for contempt of court by the High Court on 26 January 2023. The fine was to begin on 27 January if he continued attending Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath.

Mr Justice Brian O’Moore said the fine was the appropriate response to Burke’s continued refusal to obey an order barring him from the school. He said the matter would be reviewed on 10 February.

The school had sought an order over Burke’s attendance at its campus from 5 January, asking the court to sequester his assets or impose a fine. It did not want him returned to prison at that stage.

Burke opposed the application and said the order affected his religious beliefs. He had previously served 108 days in prison for contempt and was released without purging it.
