Enoch Burke faces daily fines for contempt of court

Enoch Burke faced a daily €700 fine for contempt of court at the High Court on 27 January 2023, after a deadline to comply with an order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital passed.

At a separate application that afternoon, Wilson’s Hospital sought to correct two inaccuracies in a sworn statement supporting its case against Burke. Counsel said a meeting about a student’s requested name and pronoun had been attended by one parent, not both, and the school’s then principal had been present only briefly, rather than throughout.

Mr Justice Conor Dignam adjourned the school’s application until Tuesday and said it was right to seek to correct the errors. Counsel said the corrections would not affect orders already made, including the injunction requiring Burke to stay away from the Co Westmeath school.
