Education support worker awarded €33,500 for disability discrimination

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An education support worker was awarded €33,500 for disability discrimination by the Workplace Relations Commission, reported on 7 July 2023. Adjudicator Brian Dalton found that her employer knew about her disability but failed to assess how she could reasonably be accommodated during an office move.

The worker had said a move to Carlow could leave her too far from hospital during a potentially fatal Addison’s disease episode. The employer denied discrimination, saying reasonable steps had been taken and that using the Naas office was not viable. The worker’s identity was withheld to protect sensitive medical data.
