Éamonn Donnellan’s High Court challenge to a €1.5 million Greek tax demand was referred to the European Court of Justice, reported on 28 October 2015. The demand followed his overturned Greek smuggling conviction after 176,000 packs of contraband cigarettes were found in his truck at Patras in 2002.
Mr Donnellan disputes the demand, alleging procedural flaws and an abuse of process. The matter was adjourned to the following month so the parties could try to agree the wording of the legal issues for referral.
