Dublin man killed in fatal shooting was accused of stealing from Wicklow Tesco store
The Wicklow PeopleA theft case against a man shot dead in what was Ireland’s first fatal shooting in two years was struck out after the court was told he had recently died.
Mark Cullen (39), with previous addresses in Shankill, Dún Laoghaire and Ballybrack, was due to appear before a sitting of Bray District Court for a hearing relating to an alleged theft from a Tesco store in Greystones in 2023.
It was alleged that the accused stole groceries and electrical items worth more than €350.
When the defendant’s name was called, his counsel, Eamonn O’Moore, informed the court that his client had recently passed away, and the matter was struck out by Judge Andy Gubbins.
Mr Cullen was shot dead at Patrician Park, Kill Avenue, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, on Sunday, July 5.
The career criminal, who played a prominent role in the Ballybrack anti-immigration movement, was a regular before Dún Laoghaire District Court. He was last released from prison in May 2025, but had previous convictions for threatening and abusive behaviour, assault, and carrying a knife.
It is understood that Mr Cullen owed a substantial drugs debt and was involved in a violent feud with rival gangsters in South County Dublin.
One arrest has been made, with the man later being released without charge. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
His funeral is due to take place on July 18 at 10am in St Anne’s Roman Catholic Church, Shankill, followed by burial in Shanganagh Cemetery.
