A disqualified driver who was caught behind the wheel of a stolen car in Wicklow has been jailed for four months

Ned Collins (21), of Collinstown Crescent, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, appeared before a sitting of Bray District Court for sentencing on charges of driving without a valid licence, unauthorised taking of a vehicle and handling stolen property.

The facts were heard at a previous sitting. Mr Collins, who was also disqualified from driving, and his co-accused were apprehended in the car park of the Beehive Pub in Brittas Bay while driving a stolen vehicle.

Judge David Kennedy accepted jurisdiction in respect of Mr Collins. However, he refused jurisdiction in relation to his co-accused, who is awaiting a book of evidence and will now face the Circuit Criminal Court, which has the power to impose more severe penalties.

Mr Collins was caught driving a Volkswagen Golf that had been reported stolen in County Kildare.

It was noted that Mr Collins has a “pattern of committing serious crime”.

Judge Paula Cullinane sentenced the defendant to four months imprisonment for the unauthorised taking of the vehicle.
