A 20-year-old motorist who admitted his involvement in a North Louth hit-and-run has been bound to the peace after paying compensation for damage to the other vehicle.

Darlington Ekweozor, The Green, Lennonstown Manor, Dundalk, was summonsed for failing to give information about the incident at Jenkinstown Cross on February 18, 2023.

Evidence was heard previously that a Volkswagen Golf containing up to five males ran a ‘Stop’ sign and collided with a van in which the driver and two children were travelling.

The car, registered to Mr Ekweozor, left the scene.

Gardaí subsequently spoke to him about who was driving. He failed to provide any information.

Solicitor Peter Lavery said his client accepted full responsibility for what happened. No injuries occurred but some damage was outstanding.

The defendant lived with his mother and brothers and worked in a takeaway.

On that occasion Judge Eirinn McKiernan adjourned the case for payment of the €2,335 damage. If that was done Mr Ekweozor would be placed on a peace bond and left without a conviction.

On September 3 the court heard that last February €1,250 was handed over and the defendant now had the €1,085 balance.

Judge Susan Fay bound Mr Ekweozor to the peace for one year on his own bond.
