Donegal darts player pays compensation to hotel staff member following assault
The KerrymanA judge has criticised a Donegal darts player for behaving ‘appallingly’ to staff Killarney’s Gleneagle Hotel after a tournament.
Andrew Barron (48) of Donegal Road, Ballybofey, Donegal appeared at Killarney District Court for sentencing after a January conviction for assault and intoxication in a public place to the extent that he posed a danger to himself or others.
Mr Barron had pushed the night manager, dislocating his shoulder and causing lacerations to his right hand on November 9, 2024.
In sentencing, the judge noted Mr Barrow had contested the matter in full.
“I viewed the CCTV and this man behaved appallingly on the night,” said Judge David Waters. Staff had “tried gently to coax him”, recalled the judge. “He was dealt with in a very appropriate manner and behaved badly.”
Although Mr Barron had numerous character references, Judge Waters noted it was “very easy for someone to put something down on paper and send it 300 miles away”.
However, Mr Barron had no previous convictions and did not appear to have intended injury. Additionally, he had brought a substantial contribution for the injured party to court as an indication of remorse.
The judge therefore applied the Probation Act.
