Donatus Okafor loses unfair dismissal claim over sleeping

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Workplace Relations Commission adjudicator Paul McKeon dismissed Donatus Okafor’s unfair dismissal claim against Synergy Security Solutions, reported on 8 May 2023. The claim concerned his dismissal from a security post at Google’s Barrow Street base in Dublin after Synergy found him asleep on duty.

Okafor disputed sleeping and said antidepressant medication made him dizzy before he sat at his desk with his eyes closed. Synergy said a supervisor found him asleep after five unanswered calls from the security control room.

McKeon found Synergy was reasonably entitled to treat Okafor’s conduct as misconduct warranting dismissal.
