Detention facility worker awarded €20,000 after being denied promotion

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Workplace Relations Commission found that a detention facility employee was discriminated against on the basis of disability when management treated him as immunocompromised and denied him a promotion. The WRC awarded him €20,000 compensation.

The employee said he returned to work in June 2021 after cocooning due to Stills disease, and that an occupational health assessment in May 2021 had found him fit to work subject to risk-assessment guidelines. He argued that management wrongly considered him at risk from Covid-19 and regarded his existing low-contact role, which he had held since 2019, as an accommodation.
