Defendant admits to drugs offences in Galway

Sean Meier, with an address at 135 Costa Na Mara, Oranmore, entered a signed guilty plea to an offence contrary to Section 15 (A) of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
As the value of the drugs in question amounted to €13,000 or more, the offence carries a presumptive minimum sentence of ten years in prison – and up to maximum sentence of life.
The sentencing judge has discretion not to impose the ten-year minimum term should certain circumstances exist in the case.
It is alleged the accused was in possession of the drugs at 135 Costa Na Mara on February 26, 2025.
Sergeant Damien Prendergast told Galway District Court the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had consented to the accused being sent forward on a signed plea for sentencing at Galway Circuit Court, on the Section 15 (A) charge.
The court heard the State was withdrawing other charges previously brought against the accused under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Defence solicitor, Sean Acton, confirmed to the court that his client was entering a signed plea to the single charge.
The signed plea means the accused is entitled to a reduced sentence when the case is considered by the Circuit Court.
Judge John King made the order sending the accused forward for sentencing.
He also granted legal aid for Mr Acton and two counsel.
