Dean Hurley loses sexual assault conviction appeal

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Dean Hurley’s sexual assault conviction appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, reported on 15 May 2023. His conviction concerned an assault at the home he shared with the girl’s mother in County Wicklow.

Hurley had been convicted by a Dublin Circuit Court jury on 5 October 2021 and sentenced to three years and six months in prison, with the final six months suspended.

The appeal challenged the conviction on four grounds and sought to introduce an unedited victim impact statement prepared after conviction. The court said the new evidence did not contradict or impugn the complainant’s core allegation and rejected all grounds of appeal.
