The WRC awarded Sergeant David Haughney €65,000 for disability discrimination by An Garda Síochána. The proceedings were reported on 2 November 2023.
The decision concerned the force’s failure to provide reasonable accommodation after Haughney suffered a serious eye injury in an on-duty assault.
He lost 70 per cent of the vision in his left eye in December 2014. He was deemed fit to return to duties in November 2015 and returned to work in December 2015.
The WRC found that accommodations provided by three superintendents were withdrawn by Superintendent Adrian Gamble after Haughney returned to work in 2019.
The WRC directed the force to pay the compensation within 42 days.
