This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Damian Szatkowski was jailed for six and a half years for manslaughter by Ms Justice Eileen Creedon at the Central Criminal Court on 17 February 2025.

Szatkowski pleaded guilty in October 2024 to the manslaughter of Marcel Kusenda in Newbridge, Co Kildare, on or about 8 March 2023.

The judge set a headline sentence of 10 years before reducing it after considering mitigation, including Szatkowski’s guilty plea and letter of apology. She backdated the sentence to when he first went into custody in April 2023.

The court heard that Kusenda was struck and kicked during two episodes of violence and that Szatkowski prevented a witness from calling an ambulance. Following his arrest, Szatkowski maintained during interviews that he had punched Kusenda only once.
