Ciprian Grozavu was sentenced to eight years at the Central Criminal Court on 27 July 2021 for impeding the apprehension or prosecution of another, after helping dispose of Jonathan Duke’s body in Bandon, Co Cork.
A concurrent six-year term was imposed for helping move Duke’s body from the scene. Both sentences were backdated to 13 November 2011, when Grozavu was first taken into custody.
The judge set headline sentences of nine years and seven years respectively, then reduced each by one year. He said the attempt to dispose of the body was the more serious offence and an insult to Duke’s dignity.
Grozavu was acquitted of Duke’s murder at a retrial, but a unanimous jury convicted him of two counts of impeding the apprehension or prosecution of another. The eight-year and six-year sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
