A minor has been awarded over €19,000 in damages after being injured in a car crash on the N17 when he was five years old.

An infant settlement application was brought before a sitting of Sligo Circuit Civil Court by the child, suing through his father.

Mr Eoin McGovern BL, instructed by Horan and Sons solicitors outlined to Judge Deirdre Browne that July 13, 2023, the child was in the car driven by his father on the N17, when another car collided with them.

The court heard that the minor suffered psychological injuries, had emotional outbursts and withdrew from social activities after the accident.

Mr McGovern said that the Personal Injuries Board assessed damages to be €19.355.84 of which €6,631.34 would account for special costs. He added that the minor has avoided entering cars since the accident.

Judge Browne noted that the minor had made a good recovery within a year of the accident. She approved the settlement of €19,355.84 which included €5,000 to go towards play therapy so that the child could continue their recovery.
