A third year aerospace engineering student was before the court on charges of driving without insurance and dangerous driving which resulted in a collision on May 15 2024.

Garda Sergeant Victor Isdell gave evidence to the court that Mohammed Aliane (23) of Charlotte Rooms, Charlotte Street, Carlow, was detected driving at Killinick while attempting a dangerous overtake.

Gardaí activated the blue lights and pursued the vehicle being driven by Aliane which carried out a series of dangerous driving manoeuvres including entering a roundabout at speed.

During the pursuit Aliane attempted an overtaking manoeuvre which caused his vehicle to clip the wheel of another vehicle causing a collision with a car being driven by a woman in her 60s. The woman suffered a fractured back and punctured lung as a result of the crash.

Edward King, solicitor for Aliane, submitted apologies on behalf of his client and expressed his deep remorse for what happened. The solicitor said the accused received injuries of his own making in the crash and was lucky he did not kill the injured party or himself.

Judge Cheatle accepted Aliane’s remorse as being genuine further commenting on how Aliane could have killed the injured party. He imposed a six month sentence suspended for 12 months along with a further six month sentence suspended for 24 months to run consecutively. Aliane also received a four year disqualification from driving.
