Carl Scully received a six-month suspended sentence for careless driving causing death at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 12 June 2023.
Scully pleaded guilty to careless driving causing the death of Anthony Hanney on Finglas Road on 12 December 2018.
Scully had entered a bus lane before he was permitted to and struck Mr Hanney as he crossed the road. Judge Pauline Codd noted that the point of impact was five metres from where Scully could have entered the lane legitimately. She also said Mr Hanney had been crossing a busy road in a dangerous place without a pedestrian crossing, where pedestrians might not be expected.
Judge Codd set a 10-month headline sentence before imposing the six-month suspended sentence. She ordered Scully to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for one year and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.
