Brothers in Kerry court over fight outside popular nightclub
The KerrymanA Saint Patrick’s Day celebration landed two brothers before Listowel District Court for public order charges.
Brothers Shane McCarthy (28) and Stephen McCarthy (31) of Gortnaminch, Listowel stood together in the courtroom on charges of threatening or abusive behaviour.
The court heard that the brothers were involved in a row outside Mermaids Nightclub in the early hours of March 18, 2023.
A number of people sustained bruises and scrapes from the row, the court heard.
Defence solicitor Pat Mann described the incident as “just a row between males”.
“What happened was people simply had too much to drink,” said defence solicitor Pat Mann.
“One of them actually was quite badly injured,” he said of the brothers.
The elder brother had eight previous convictions, including two for theft. This carried a one-month suspended sentence, from March 2021, and a six-month suspended sentence, from February 2024.
The judge noted the St Patrick’s Day fight occurred between the sentences.
Taking into account the older brother’s history, he gave Stephen McCarthy a two-month sentence, suspended for one year.
