Blarney Castle Estate Partnership challenges hotel permission

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Blarney Castle Estate Partnership challenged An Bord Pleanála’s hotel and supermarket planning permission in the High Court. On 14 February 2022, the court granted the partnership permission to bring its challenge.

The permission covers an 80-bedroom hotel, licensed supermarket, commercial and office buildings, a coffee shop and 70 homes at St Ann’s Road, Monacnapa, Blarney, Co Cork, about 200 metres from the castle.

The partnership seeks to have the permission quashed, arguing that the board gave inadequate reasons and failed to properly consider the castle’s character, protected structures and planning and heritage guidance.

Mr Justice Charles Meenan granted permission for the partnership to bring the challenge on an ex parte basis. The case was due back before the court in April.
