Barber was ‘acting the maggot’ when he performed drive-by recording of gardaí in Louth

By Francis Carroll, Irish Independent

A 26-year-old barber was “acting the maggot” when recording gardaí as he drove past, Drogheda Court has been told.

Afolabi Emmanuel Mawoyeka pleaded guilty to driving without reasonable consideration and to holding a mobile phone while driving.

The defendant, of Windtown Crescent, Navan, Co. Meath, had his case adjourned, and was warned that he faced a disqualification if he did not pass with “flying colours” a Driver Awareness Course.

Gda Drew Morgan testified that at 12.40pm on June 24, 2025, while he was dealing with a separate traffic matter at Faughart Roundabout, Faughart Lower, Dundalk, a Ford Transit went by. The van driver had his hand out the window recording the interaction with a mobile phone.

Mr Mawoyeka, who has one previous conviction for no insurance, subsequently apologised.

Defence solicitor Fergal Boyle said that his client was “acting the maggot”. He couldn’t put it any other way.

It was a very immature and foolish act. Mr Mawoyeka was being a “smart alec”. He was lucky it didn’t become a more serious incident.

He worked locally as a barber and was embarrassed to be in court.

"He’s an idiot,” Judge Nicola Andrews remarked.

The case was adjourned to July 20 for completion of a Driver Awareness Course.

"Unless you pass with flying colours you will be disqualified,” the judge said.
