Ban for Louth motorist who drove at ‘absolutely outrageous’ speed

A motorist who travelled at 175kmh on the motorway has been told that the consequences would have been “catastophic” had there been a crash.
Lukasz Janiak (46), Aghaboys House, Ballymascanlon, Dundalk, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty in the district court to dangerous driving on the M1 at Drumleck, Castlebellingham, on February 4 last.
Defence solicitor Fergal Boyle said that it was an “absolutely outrageous” speed on what is always a busy road.
He had a firm and frank conversation with his client. This had been a real eye opener for Mr Janiak who relied on his licence for work.
The defendant accepted the facts. He didn’t want to “drag it out”.
Judge Nicola Andrews said that in llght of the guilty and previous record, there would be no custody, but she was not considering a “downward reduction” (to careless driving).
"It would have been catastrophic for other road users if there had been a crash,” the judge continued.
A €101 fine and two-year driving disqualification were imposed.
Bail in the event of an appeal was set at personal bond of €100.
