A Carlow man accused of sexually exploiting eight children and possessing dozens of videos and images of child abuse material has been granted bail.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at a sitting of Bray District Court charged with 12 sexually related offences.

It is alleged that between December 2023 and the end of January 2024, the accused did knowingly distribute and produce child pornography.

Between June 2023 and February 2024, at an unknown location, he allegedly used technology to communicate with and facilitate the sexual exploitation of eight different young girls.

He is also accused of possessing 30 videos and 60 images of child pornography on a Samsung device.

Sergeant Mick Canavan noted that detectives from the Divisional Protective Services Unit (DPSU), which is attached to Wicklow Town Garda Station, were present in court.

The court was told that bail conditions were agreed with the defendant.

His bail conditions include that he must not have any contact with the complainants involved in the case, surrender his passport, commit no further criminal offences and sign on at a Garda station in Carlow.

Judge Mary McAveety adjourned the matter until October 15 to allow for the preparation of a book of evidence.

The case is going forward to Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court, which has harsher sentencing penalties.
