Anthony Dennis was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where Judge Martin Nolan backdated the sentence to 12 January 2024. He had pleaded guilty to threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a prison officer at Cloverhill Prison on 29 September 2020.
The court heard that Dennis had 331 previous convictions and had spent half his life in custody. His defence said he entered custody young, had lost both parents and developed drug addictions at a young age; he had also linked in with Fr Peter McVerry Trust and hoped to enter residential treatment. The judge said his problems were mostly of his own making.
The proceedings were reported on 24 January 2024.
