Andrew Gibney is on trial at the Central Criminal Court for murdering Gerard Burnett. He pleaded not guilty. The proceedings were reported on 15 January 2014.
Gerard Burnett sustained 30 stab wounds after being attacked at Castlecurragh Vale, Mulhuddart on August 21, 2012, and was pronounced dead in hospital shortly afterwards.
The prosecution alleged that Andrew Gibney went to Mr Burnett’s house with other men, was armed with a knife and participated in the stabbing. Andrew Gibney later told gardaí that he used the knife three times, but said alcohol had triggered the events and that his intention was not murder.
Denise Farrell, who was in the house, described the door being answered and Mr Burnett being dragged outside. Under cross-examination, she agreed that Mr Burnett had previously stabbed Andrew Gibney in the back during a “straightener”, and that Mr Burnett had carried out burglaries and stolen cars. State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy said the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the heart, right lung and liver. The trial continued before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy and a jury.
