Aaron Brady convicted of capital murder of Adrian Donohoe

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Aaron Brady was convicted of the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe. The proceedings were reported on 12 August 2020.

The report said all 12 jurors rejected Brady’s account that he was laundering diesel when the robbery and shooting occurred, and 11 were willing to convict him of capital murder. Brady had told the court that he lied to gardai because he did not want to implicate himself in diesel laundering.

Molly Staunton and Daniel Cahill gave evidence that Brady had admitted shooting a garda while living in New York. The defence described Staunton as unreliable because she changed her evidence under cross-examination before returning to her original account. Defence counsel also suggested Cahill may have faced threats or inducements from Homeland Security; Cahill denied being pressured, and a Homeland Security agent denied that any promise or offer had been made to him.

The report said Brady would be sentenced to life imprisonment with a mandatory minimum term of 40 years.
