The unnamed 42-year-old accused was on trial for rape at the Central Criminal Court before Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy and a jury. The proceedings were reported on 15 June 2016.

He has pleaded not guilty to rape, assault causing harm and five counts of threats to kill or cause serious harm. Those charges concern the period between 24 May and 1 August 2014.

The jury heard that he had already pleaded guilty to a count of assaulting his wife with a hammer. That assault was in August 2014.

The complainant said the alleged rape occurred on 25 May 2014. She said he took up a knife and threatened to cut her face open before pushing her upstairs and raping her. She alleged that he later threatened to kill her if she did not mean her promise that they would stay together.

She said she left the following day and obtained a temporary barring order against the accused. Her evidence was due to continue the day after the report.
