A 24-year-old man accused of enhancing the activity of a criminal organisation by facilitating the distribution of drugs in Galway, has been further remanded in custody.

Dolapo Shomefun, with an address at 206 An Seán Bháile, Doughiska, appeared by video link at Galway District Court this week, having previously been brought before a special sitting of the court last week.

He is charged on dates between January 1, 2020, and February 2, 2026, within the State and in the district court area of Galway, he did, for the purpose of enhancing the activity of a criminal organisation, commit and facilitate a serious offence — the sale and supply of controlled drugs contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The charge alleges Shomefun knowingly enhanced the commission of a serious offence, by facilitating the distribution of controlled drugs, in Galway City and County.

The alleged offence is contrary to section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 and carries a maximum sentence, on indictment, of five years in prison.

Shomefun is also charged with a money-laundering offence, contrary to section 7 of the Money-laundering and Terrorist Financing Act.

That charge alleges that on dates between May 7, 2021, and July 24, 2024, converted, handled, transferred, possessed or used property that is the proceeds of criminal conduct, to wit, the use of an N26 bank account in the name of Dolapo Shomefun.

Defence barrister, Garry McDonald BL, told the court that his client could only apply for bail on the section 72 charge in the High Court.

Sergeant Christy Browne confirmed to the court the investigation into that alleged offence was linked to the allegation of money-laundering.

Judge Valerie Corcoran said that in those circumstances, any application for bail should be made before the High Court.

She remanded the accused in custody to appear again on February 23 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
