Summary

Gareth Duffy, 44, of Stella Gardens, Irishtown, Dublin 4, was found guilty of assault causing harm after he stomped on a friend's head and repeatedly kicked him while the victim lay unconscious on a packed Luas tram on 6 July 2019. CCTV footage showed Duffy leaving the tram, returning twice, and continuing to strike the victim's head. He had 144 prior convictions, including assault, public order and violence in a Garda station. Duffy pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The victim did not cooperate with the Garda investigation or give a victim impact statement, and no medical report was presented. Judge Pauline Codd described the violence as appalling, noted Duffy's rehabilitation efforts, and imposed a four‑year sentence, suspending the final three years on strict conditions. The case was heard in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
