Suspended sentence for IBRC worker who stole mortgage arrears cash

Summary

Shane O'Brien, a 29‑year‑old Westmeath resident, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to theft from the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC) between November 2011 and July 2013. While working in the early arrears team, he took cash payments from four clients in mortgage arrears and pocketed the money instead of passing it on to offset their mortgages. He admitted to stealing a total of €2,886 and to having alerted his employers to the thefts. Judge Martin Nolan imposed a one‑year suspended sentence on the condition that O'Brien repay the full amount within a month. O'Brien had no prior convictions and had not been involved with the Gardaí since the incident.
