Gerard McCarthy, 64, of Clonlost, Killucan, Co. Westmeath, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court after pleading guilty to 24 sample counts of rape and 24 sample counts of indecent assault. The offences, which occurred between 1979 and 1985, were committed against his niece, Catriona Mahon, when she was aged between seven and 13. Mr Justice David Keane imposed a sentence of seven years' imprisonment, with the final 12 months suspended on strict conditions for two years. The judge directed McCarthy to participate in a sexual offender's rehabilitation programme if deemed suitable and imposed a two-year post-release supervision order. Aggravating factors included the high degree of breach of trust, the victim's age and defencelessness, and the persistent nature of the offending. Mitigating factors included McCarthy's early admissions of guilt, his signed guilty pleas at the District Court, and his lack of previous convictions. The court acknowledged the victim's courage in coming forward after four decades of silence. McCarthy's defence counsel highlighted his cooperation, medical issues, and a letter of apology expressing shame. The judge affirmed that the shame lay solely with the convicted man and wished the victim well in her recovery.

Vladislovas Jurevicius, a 39‑year‑old chef, was arrested in February 2024 after Gardaí discovered he had cloned fuel cards from a trucking logistics company and used them to steal an estimated €25,000 worth of diesel between August 2023 and February 2024. He pleaded guilty to possession of a card with intent to commit theft and five counts of stealing diesel at an Applegreen service station in Ballymount, as well as one count of cultivating juvenile cannabis plants at his home in Greenfield Heights, Rathwire, Co. Westmeath. Gardaí found 35 cannabis plants, two empty 200‑litre fuel barrels, and photographs of the cloned cards on Jurevicius's phone. He has no prior convictions and was described by his employer as a valuable staff member. The court ordered a probation report and adjourned the case to October 6, allowing Jurevicius to provide additional restitution to the affected company.

Adrian Short, 45, of Corbetstown, Killucan, was given a 16‑month suspended sentence for possessing seven images and 14 videos of child pornography, including extreme content involving children as young as two years old. The videos showed sexual intercourse between children and adults. Judge Melanie Greally noted that no other material was found on Short's devices and that he had been fully forthright, cooperative and had voluntarily attended a Garda interview. The judge cited Short's early guilty plea, high level of cooperation, lack of prior convictions, personal history, and past trauma as mitigating factors. He was also noted to have a low risk of reoffending according to a probation report. Short must remain under probation supervision for 16 months, submit to monitoring and risk assessments, and continue counselling as directed.

Adrian Short, 45, a former Irish Defence Forces member, pleaded guilty to possessing seven images and 14 videos of child pornography. The case was adjourned to allow an independent risk assessment before sentencing. Judge Melanie Greally ordered the Probation Service to conduct the assessment as part of a probation report to determine if additional safeguards are required. Short was arrested after a warrant was obtained following a referral from the Garda National Protective Bureau. A search on March 29, 2021, found a Samsung Galaxy phone and other devices; the phone held sexually explicit images of children and videos of adults abusing children. Short admitted to accessing the material, including via the Telegram app, and claimed he had been sexually abused by his father as a child. He has been in counselling and the case will be finalised on October 21.

Shane O'Brien, a 29‑year‑old Westmeath resident, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to theft from the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC) between November 2011 and July 2013. While working in the early arrears team, he took cash payments from four clients in mortgage arrears and pocketed the money instead of passing it on to offset their mortgages. He admitted to stealing a total of €2,886 and to having alerted his employers to the thefts. Judge Martin Nolan imposed a one‑year suspended sentence on the condition that O'Brien repay the full amount within a month. O'Brien had no prior convictions and had not been involved with the Gardaí since the incident. The judge noted that O'Brien claimed he was in great need of the money and that he had never been in trouble before or since.
