Chris Kelly is appealing a six-year sentence for possession of a firearm, with the final year suspended, imposed by Kilkenny Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 30 January 2023.
Kelly pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm relating to an incident at Ballinlaw, Slieverue, Co Kilkenny, on 20 May 2020. He appealed on the basis that his sentence was a year longer than co-accused Kealan Madden's sentence.
At the Court of Appeal, counsel said Kelly had given some co-operation in interviews before his guilty plea. The court noted that the firearm had been modified for use, while judgment was reserved until February 17.
