A man from Monaghan has been sentenced to four years imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court for the rape of a teenager he had met for the first time. Shane McGovern, aged 31, approached the then 18-year-old outside a bar and offered him accommodation at his home. The victim later woke to find McGovern assaulting him. He feigned waking and left the property, reporting the incident to gardaí immediately. McGovern, of Mullaghmatt, Monaghan, pleaded guilty to anal rape on 20 May 2022. In sentencing, Mr Justice Paul McDermott acknowledged the victim's courage in reporting the crime and engaging with the justice system. The judge set a headline sentence of seven years and six months, applying significant mitigation for the early guilty plea. He imposed four years in prison with the final twelve months suspended, conditional on engagement with the Probation Service. A contact prohibition between McGovern and the victim was also imposed.
