Darren Murphy, a man convicted of his role as a "spotter" in the 2012 murder of criminal Eamon Kelly in Dublin, has failed in his appeal to overturn the conviction at the Court of Appeal. Murphy, aged 53, was found guilty by the Special Criminal Court in November 2021 of Kelly's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2022. Murphy's legal team had challenged the CCTV identification process used to identify him, arguing it was flawed and raised questions about Garda witness credibility. Presiding Justice Úna Ní Raifeartaigh rejected these submissions, finding the identification procedure was rigorous and well-managed. The court noted that eight of fifty-eight gardaí independently identified Murphy from CCTV footage. Justice Ní Raifeartaigh also upheld the trial court's findings that Murphy's involvement constituted murder through joint enterprise, based on evidence of planning, surveillance, and coordination with other gang members. The appeal was dismissed in its entirety.
