Enoch Burke to remain in prison as family members again removed from court

Teacher Enoch Burke will remain in Mountjoy Prison after refusing to comply with a court order to stay away from Wilson's Hospital School in County Mayo. Mr Justice Mark Sanfey heard at the High Court on Tuesday that Mr Burke would not agree to the undertaking, stating it conflicted with his religious beliefs. Members of Mr Burke's family were removed from court by gardaí after disrupting proceedings. The judge directed that Mr Burke remain imprisoned for contempt unless he provides undertakings to secure his release, noting the court was concerned solely with the contempt matter rather than the underlying dispute. Mr Burke argued his imprisonment resulted from an unconstitutional order. The case will be reviewed again on 12 December. Mr Burke was committed to prison last month after the school's Board of Management sought his attachment for breaching a permanent injunction restraining him from the school campus.
