A 30-year-old man from Claragh, Ramelton, County Donegal has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison following his conviction for assaulting an 86-year-old woman in Dublin. The attack occurred in the early hours of 1 September 2022 in Dublin 6. The victim, who had become disoriented whilst returning home, was subjected to serious violence including being struck to the ground, punched in the face, kicked, and forced head-first into a wheelie bin. The man also robbed the woman of her wallet and mobile phone, and falsely imprisoned her. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, he pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, robbery, and false imprisonment. The court heard he was experiencing induced psychosis due to intoxication at the time. The woman sustained a fractured nose and subsequently required constant care. She has since moved into a nursing home due to balance difficulties and increased fall risk. The final six months of the sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour and abstinence from alcohol and drugs for two years following release.
