The Special Criminal Court heard that bullet cases recovered from the Regency Hotel murder scene were fired from three AK-47 variant assault rifles seized during a garda operation in County Meath one month after David Byrne's death in February 2016. Detective Garda David O'Leary, a ballistics expert, testified that cartridge cases found in the hotel lobby and function room matched the weapons recovered. The rifles comprised Chinese, Romanian, and Yugoslavian variants of the Kalashnikov, all chambered for 7.62 millimetre ammunition consistent with rounds discharged at the scene. The weapons were recovered during a vehicle stop at Balrath, Slane, County Meath on 9 March 2016. Shane Rowan from County Donegal, who was driving the vehicle, was subsequently jailed for possession of the firearms and IRA membership. The trial of Gerard Hutch, who denies murdering Byrne during a boxing weigh-in, continues before three judges at the Special Criminal Court.
