Victim speaks after coercive control rapist who targeted women through dating sites gets 17 years

Dean Ward, formerly of County Wexford, remains imprisoned following his conviction for a sustained campaign of violence and sexual abuse against a woman in Killybegs, County Donegal. Sentenced to seventeen years imprisonment in July 2022, Ward was found guilty of twelve offences committed over a six-week period between June and July 2019, including three counts of rape, four assaults, false imprisonment, threats to kill, and coercive control. The offences came to light after Ward, who had met his victim through an online dating platform in May 2019, moved into her home in Killybegs. Over the following weeks, he subjected her to systematic violence and psychological manipulation, securing her consent to sexual intercourse through fear and force. Justice Kerida Naidoo imposed an eighteen-year sentence for the most serious rape charge, suspending the final year, alongside a concurrent four-year term for the coercive control offence. Ward was arrested by armed gardaí in July 2019 but maintained his innocence throughout proceedings. At the time of sentencing, the victim spoke publicly outside court, expressing her gratitude for support received from An Garda Síochána and urging others experiencing domestic abuse to seek assistance. In her later impact statement, she described how the six-week ordeal had devastated her life. Ward's appeal against conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in December 2025. Justice John Edwards rejected his arguments that victim testimony regarding previous threats to kill and evidence of financial control constituted unfair prejudice, finding such evidence was both relevant and probative to establishing coercive control and the complainant's state of mind. The court upheld the trial judge's refusal to discharge the jury. Ward holds previous convictions for assault and false imprisonment dating to 2016, demonstrating a pattern of violent and controlling behaviour spanning several years.
