The High Court has lifted a gagging order that prevented the media from naming Alan Harte, a 40-year-old man convicted of kidnapping and torturing Kevin Lunney, a director of Quinn Industrial Holdings. Harte was previously identified only as "YZ" in media reporting. On 17 September 2019, Harte abducted Mr Lunney from his home in County Fermanagh and inflicted serious injuries, including knife wounds. The naming restriction had remained in place because Harte faced trial on an unrelated murder charge, which the Director of Public Prosecutions subsequently withdrew. In December last, the Special Criminal Court sentenced Harte to 30 years' imprisonment following his conviction for false imprisonment and intentionally causing serious harm to Mr Lunney at Drumbrade, County Cavan. Mr Justice Tony Hunt described Harte as the ringleader responsible for calculated harm and noted the scarring was designed to mark the victim in a deliberate manner. Harte has 180 previous convictions.
