Michael Murray (50) has been sentenced to an additional 16 years imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for harassment and death threats directed at lawyers and his rape victim. Murray, formerly of Killiney, Dublin, was convicted of making death threats against barristers Dominic McGinn SC and Tony McGillicuddy BL, who prosecuted his original rape trial in 2013. He was also found guilty of harassing his victim by posting advertisements describing her as a prostitute online, and of similar posts targeting the barristers and his former defence solicitor in early 2015. Murray pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court heard that Murray made threatening phone calls to the lawyers and caused the victim, whom he had been convicted of raping and falsely imprisoning in 2010, severe distress. Judge O'Connor described his conduct as an "unprecedented and deliberate abuse of proceedings" and a "fundamental attack" on the justice system. Murray was excluded from his sentence hearing after throwing a Bible at the judge. He is serving an existing 19-year sentence for the original rape conviction.
