A man with links to County Monaghan has been sentenced to seven-and-a-half years imprisonment for raping a woman in her Dublin home following their meeting on a dating application. The Central Criminal Court heard that the assault occurred on 5 January 2018 after the accused invited himself into the victim's bedroom. During the attack, he used physical violence including striking her head against the floor, filmed part of the incident on his phone, and ignored her pleas to stop. The victim sustained injuries to her genital and anal areas and was subsequently diagnosed with a new sexually transmitted infection. Justice Paul McDermott noted the particularly grave nature of the offence, given it occurred within the victim's own home by someone she had invited inside. The court imposed the sentence with the final eighteen months suspended on conditions including a prohibition on using online dating applications. The accused, originally from Monaghan with a Dublin address, pleaded guilty to rape and oral rape.
