A man in his early thirties has received a fully suspended two-year prison sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to possession of child sexual abuse material. The accused downloaded 1,299 video files depicting children, predominantly aged between eight and 15 years, being abused. One file showed abuse of an infant. He was arrested following a joint investigation by UK authorities and Irish gardaí, which identified his laptop as the source of downloads occurring between October 2017 and August 2018. Judge Elma Sheahan acknowledged the severity of the offence but noted the defendant had engaged with therapeutic services since November 2018. She cited concrete evidence of rehabilitation as grounds for suspending the sentence entirely, on condition he continue therapeutic intervention. The defendant had cooperated fully with gardaí and denied distributing the material. He has since lost employment following his arrest.
