A man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court for a series of rapes committed against a child between 2009 and 2011. The offences occurred when the victim was aged between seven and nine years old. Mr Justice Michael White described the attacks as extremely violent and shocking. The court heard that the man, who was already serving a fifteen-year sentence for convictions relating to another young victim, gained access to the child through a relationship with her mother and systematically abused her over the two-year period. The judge noted the severe impact on the victim, including self-harm and suicide attempts. The man initially denied the allegations after his arrest in 2012 but pleaded guilty to multiple counts last November. The eight-year sentence is to run consecutively to his existing term, with the final year suspended on condition of engaging with a sex offenders programme. The judge commended the victim's courage.
